What started as a casual endeavor making wine for family and friends has grown into Bump City Wine Co., a Sonoma-based celebration of music, wine and the melody that occurs when passions are expertly blended together. Since 2008, Roger and his longtime friend and business partner, Mike Smolich, have been crafting wine under the Four Couples, Eight Friends” and “Jazz Rosco” labels. From there, the duo’s enthusiasm for making and sharing wine turned into something more, and Bump City Wine Co. was born. “We launched in 2012 with the creation of our flagship Bordeaux-style wine, Bump City Red,” said Smith.
Bottled at Larson Family Vineyard in Sonoma, Bump City Wines represent a harmonious blend of varietals including a Bordeaux-style red blend, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. The grapes, sourced from Sonoma and Lodi, are specifically hand-selected for their quality and character. Our Sonoma vines, which reside in the Sonoma Carneros AVA, enjoy the appellation’s temperate climate renowned for its ability to grow vigorous vines with intensely beautiful and vivid flavors. Our Zinfandel grapes are sourced from Lodi, an area known for growing complex, fruit-forward flavors. Affectionately known as “Zin Central,” Lodi was the logical choice when looking to expand our repertoire. We hope you find our grapes as special as we do.
2012 BUMP CITY RED
The ripened grapes were hand-picked and de-stemmed with a portion of the whole berries left intact, fermented with inoculated yeasts, and pumped over daily. After completion of fermentation, the wine received a short extended maceration and was gently pressed. Malolactic fermentation followed pressing and the wine was then transferred to French and American oak barrels for aging. The wine was racked multiple times, yielding a delicate balance of silky fruit and oak complexity.
This Sonoma County red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah grapes. Aromas of clove, cinnamon, cedar and plum give way to soft red fruit, blackberry, cherry and currants with soft tannins, dark mocha, cranberry, vanilla and hints of fresh ground black pepper. Enjoy with BBQ, pasta, pizza and the like. This flagship wine is ready to drink now or has potential for long-term aging with controlled temperature storage.
2014 BUMP CITY CHARDONNAY
The grapes were picked by hand at the peak of ripeness. Dijon Clones 76, 95, and Clone 4 were used in the selection of grapes for this Chardonnay blend where whole clusters were gently pressed into juice using a Champagne program. The juice was then cold settled and racked into stainless steel tanks and oak barrels for fermentation. The yeast lees were hand-stirred monthly to enhance the creamy finish produced by barrel fermentation and to encourage secondary malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was aged sur lie (on the yeast) for 10 months.
This Chardonnay has bright aromas of apple, pineapple, and apricot and an elegant bouquet of vanilla and custard cream. A layer of gorgeous tropical fruits and vibrant citrus flavors balance well with supple acidity. A hint of sweet, toasty oak notes adds extra layer to the mouthfeel. It is full and smooth on the palate and goes well with shell fish or dishes with cream sauce. We hope you enjoy!
2013 BUMP CITY PINOT NOIR
The grapes for this Pinot Noir are a blend of fruit from the cool Carneros wine region of southern Sonoma Valley, producing intense flavors, spice and richness for maximum flavor and enjoyment.
This Pinot Noir has a delightful opening with a hint of blackberry, cocoa and raspberry. It is well balanced with light tannins up front and a smooth light oak finish. It will pair well with pork roast, risotto or seafood. This wine will cellar well for 5 to 7 years.
2014 BUMP CITY PINOT GRIGIO
This Sonoma County Pinot Grigio began in the renowned Caneros and Sonoma Coast grape growing appellation known for its fog and wind induced cool summers and shallow soils that produce exceptional grapes. The 2014 growing season produced a phenomenal vintage.
Harvest started earlier than usual and the warm benign spring ensured healthy fruit set. Mild, dry weather throughout the growing season brought the grapes to the ultimate maturity level. The grapes were then hand-picked and the juice was chilled, settled and racked into a stainless steel fermenter for cold fermentation. A touch of oaked Chardonnay was added to give this wine its smooth finish.
This Pinot Grigio is a brilliant straw yellow color. It expresses beautiful aromas of lime, pears and a hint of honeysuckle along with the pleasant herbal notes of bay leaf and cardamom. At first sip, vibrant citrus flavors jump and expand on the palette. Refreshing natural acidity melts into the natural flavors creating an elegant finish. It pairs well with fresh vegetables, white meat fish, lightly seasoned pasta and exotic spicy foods. Serve chilled as a perfect aperitif.
BUMP CITY 2013 ZINFANDEL
The grapes were sourced from 35 ~ 80 year-old vines in Lodi, which yield fewer clusters with smaller berries that can produce wine with more intensity and complexity. These grapes were hand-picked and de-stemmed with a portion of the whole berries left intact. The fermentation started with commercial yeast and the must was pumped over three times daily. After the completion of fermentation, the wine received a short extended maceration and was gently pressed. Malolactic fermentation followed pressing and the wine was then transferred to French and American oak barrels for aging.
This Zinfandel is a harmonious expression of fruit with flavors of raspberry, plum, and cherry. Sweet oak notes such as molasses, cedar, and cloves add complexity and linger long. Bold yet elegant, this well balanced Zin can be paired with a wide range of great dishes. Enjoy.
